Restoring Mobility the clavicle

Instructor:  Randal Persad, Dip, Pharm., RMT

Two Dates - May 5 & 6, 2012 or October 13 & 14, 2012

The clavicle is the most commonly fractured bone in the body. Its role and function in shoulder function and stability is often over looked by many practitioners including massage therapists, physiotherapists and medical doctors. It is very common for the practicing RMT to work with several clients a day who present with shoulder discomfort. Treatment approaches vary from GH joint mobilization, to Swedish massage to myofascial release.  While all these approaches are beneficial, what is often missed are the ligamentous and myofascial attachments of the clavicle. This workshop brings an increased awareness and focus to the clavicle, it’s role in glenohumeral movement and the structures associated with it. It will also provide hands on practice and guidelines for working with connective tissue structures that are important for clavicular mobility.  Clavicular immobility is commonly associated with conditions such as frozen shoulder, painful arc syndrome, post clavicular fracture, subacromial bursitis, rotator cuff tendonitis and other shoulder pathologies.

Dimensional Massage Therapy Techniques for Soft-tissue Conditions of the Forearm, Hand and Wrist

Instructor:  Nancy Dail, BA, LMT, NCTMB

October 20 & 21, 2012

The body is all connected. It has depth, width, and length. The joints in the body provide a network of anatomical structures designed for regular use. Repetitive actions cause a constant torque on our guy-wire tendons and muscles that enable our joints to function. How many of your clients have repetitive action conditions of the forearm, hand and wrist? Consider a Dimensional approach to this vast area of concern! In this workshop participants will explore, evaluate and treat a variety of common difficult conditions affecting the forearm, hand and wrist region. Nancy will lecture on the skeletal and neurological anatomy of the upper extremity, with particular emphasis on the brachial plexus and its distal destinations. She will also address the specific etiologies, signs, symptoms and massage treatments related to the pathologies of these areas. She will demonstrate hands-on evaluation techniques designed to assess the pathologies discussed. Special attention will be given to discuss the history and exam findings that would warrant health professional referral. Nancy will provide by lecture and power point review of the muscles and soft tissue structures of the arm, forearm, hand, and wrist. She will discuss trigger points, and referred pain patterns and repetitive actions that affect the wrist. Nancy will demonstrate techniques used in Dimensional Massage Therapy and provide supervision for hands-on practice by participants.  Dimensional Massage Therapy techniques are deep tissue strokes and methods that have been designed to balance joints by working on all the muscles that produce, assist in, or oppose the actions of, or stabilize the joints. They include a wide variety of dual-hand techniques, elliptical movement of soft tissues, active engagement techniques and determining the appropriate sequence for forearm, wrist, or hand conditions.

He was a senior instructor in the practical department and taught Orthopaedic Assessment and Treatment, Hydrotherapy and Therapeutic Exercise. He also developed and taught several courses on Physical Methods and Agents at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine and Bodywork and Hydrotherapy principles in the Spa Technology Program at Langara College.  While at WCCMT, Randy integrated his knowledge of pharmaceuticals and massage therapy to develop the curriculum guidelines for the medications component of the Medicine and Surgery course commissioned by the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia. The course was part of the new 3000-hour curriculum for the province. It provided undergraduate students with the skills and knowledge they needed to work safely and effectively with clients taking medications.  As well, he developed course notes and taught the medications component of the Medication and Surgery course at the WCCMT for about 5 years. In addition, Randy has developed and taught several accredited continuing education workshop for practicing massage therapists including one on medications, advanced Myofascial courses for the management and rehabilitation of pain syndromes related to the cervical spine, shoulder and lower back, pelvis and the lower extremity, and he developed and continues to teach the first ‘Advanced Breast Care’ workshop for massage therapists in British Columbia.  In 2003, after his Thailand trip, Randy read an article about Spa Utopia and their expansion plans; he proposed a leadership position to the company and he was later hired as the Director of Massage Therapy. He developed the massage and hydrotherapy spa services including the procedures and protocols for each service, oversaw the training and evaluation for practitioner, and provided ongoing support, professionally and personally to members of the department.  After his recent 2011 India trip he developed and has since taught the first ‘Deep Systemic Relaxation Therapy’ self-care course for registered massage therapists.  Between June 2006 and April 2011, he held the position of Dean of Education at Utopia Academy.  Faculty of Massage Therapy to oversee the Registered Massage Therapy program. The program had an overall 90% success rating at the provincial examinations.
