Part II - Anxiety - April 11, 2010

Despite the prevalence of anxiety issues in our clients, most massage therapists have not learned much about anxiety and anxiety disorders. This workshop will begin with a discussion of what anxiety is and the effects of problem anxiety-its neurochemistry, its symptoms and secondary effects, its role as a complicating factor in injury and disease, and its impact on health and quality of life. There will be a discussion of the causes, nature and symptoms of common anxiety disorders and an overview of customary treatments. Interestingly, relieving anxiety is turning out to be one of the most consistent and powerful observed effects of massage in research findings - we will look at selections from this research data and discuss how this information can help us to design effective massage treatment approaches.

"NEW".... Dynamic Posture

Instructor:  Katerina Pek, Md(cz), MT

February 27 & 28, 2010

Specializing in treatment of pain by improving posture and activity of core muscles.  You will understand neuro-physiological principles of CNS control of posture and movement; relationship between posture – movement – core muscles - muscle strength – muscle tension and pain.  You will learn to properly activate the core musculature anywhere, anytime using basic functional whole body exercises.  You will be taught how to best convey this knowledge to your clients (patients)  Dynamic Posture Course is a ”must” for anyone interested in teaching  therapeutic exercises to clients (patients).  Dynamic Posture is a revolutionary European approach based on the newest findings in human kinetics. It presents to you an astonishingly simple yet profoundly efficient way to improve posture and mobility, to achieve joint alignment and to alleviate pain. Functional exercises using principles of Dynamic Posture focus on improving function of the deep stabilizing system (the core muscles) as it plays a crucial role in retaining stability of posture and coordinated movement.

Introduction to Abdominal Viscera

Instructor: Monica Noy, RMT

March 6 & 7, 2010

This course is designed to introduce the therapist to treatment of the abdominal contents, beyond the colon. The abdominal contents, (large and small colon, stomach, duodenum and liver) are the digestive heart of the body and have numerous connections to, and impacts on, the musculoskeletal system. Digestive problems such as IBS are common and may play a significant role in the back pain the patient is seeking treatment for. Review anatomy and connections of the abdominal viscera. Learn assessment to determine if the viscera may be contributing to pain and dysfunction in other areas. Learn to treat fascial restrictions of the viscera to help them move freely against one another and help reduce the impact these restrictions may have on the body. Integrate these techniques into current practice.

Thai Massage

Instructor: Andre Dupuis

March 6 & 7, 2010

Thai Massage is a form of manipulative healing therapy.  It uses a combination of stretching and pressure movements to balance the flow of energy (also known as chi, ki or prana) to treat muscles, ligaments, joints, bones, connective tissue and internal organs.  Giving is as good as receiving – after a bodywork session you both feel stretched, refreshed and balanced.  We will learn the supine position which is the most frequently used in Thai Massage as it provides you with access to nearly all parts of the body.  Everything taught in this one level course is hands on…you’ll learn the basic techniques for working on the muscles and Sen lines (energy lines)

" New " ... Introductory Courses in Spiraldynamik ... Part I, II and III “Does not have to be taken in sequence”

Instructor:  Katerina Pek, Md(cz), MT

Spiraldynamik is a unique and innovative (revolutionary) therapeutic and educational approach to coordinated movement, developed in Switzerland.  Based on observation and detailed knowledge of anatomy and ideal function of musculo-skeletal system, Spiraldynamik offers new body image and awareness.  These hands-on courses teach 3 dimensional mobilizations of the joints. Figure-8 movements, specifically executed are applied to the joints,   provoke repetitive action/ relaxation of the muscles. Restrictions within the joints are loosened up in an active and dynamic way to allow truly coordinated movement. Every joint is treated separately as a unit but also as an integral part of the body. Thus this approach retrains the body to improve the stability of the whole musculo-skeletal system and allows for much freer movement and pain reduction.  Application of these principles can greatly enhance treatment of almost any orthopedic condition and movement re-education in both adults and children.

Courses objectives:

1) Explanation of the concept of Spiraldynamik

2) Coordinated 3-D movement within individual joint

3) Coordinated movement of the body as a whole

4) Introduction to manual 3-D techniques for main joints

Instructors:  Margaret Colborne, RMT & Linda Simpson, B.Sc., RMT

April 23, 24, 25 & 26, 2010

NISA is a direct fascial, deep tissue technique. The NISA process releases fascial adhesions, stretches, frees & clears the tissue. The softened layers of fascia, having regained their flexibility and elasticity, permit improved structural alignment and body mechanics. The 4-day training is an intensive practical workshop.  The NISA techniques can easily be incorporated into your massage practice and significantly improve the results and sustain theeffects of your treatments on your clients.

Integrated Assessment

Instructor:  Mark Snow, RMT

May 1 & 2, 2010

This 2-day course is designed to enable the therapist to make the necessary links between the case history, observation, palpation and testing, in order to formulate an efficient and effective treatment plan.  We will dissect the key features of assessment, focusing on palpation ( direct & indirect ) as an essential tool to determine where restrictions/dysfunctions are located in the body.  The goal of the course is to improve therapist confidence with regard to:  Prioritizing areas needing treatment; Complex case presentations; considering myofascial, articular, cranial and visceral interrelationships; integrating knowledge gained from regionally focused continuing education courses; “Red-Flag” considerations.  A global integrated approach to client assessment help the therapist prioritize areas of dysfunction and decide where to treat.

Passive Stretch Massage

Instructor:  Piroska Kennedy, RMT

May 28, 29 & 30, 2010

Passive Stretch Massage (PSM) is a form of bodywork in which the client is dressed in loose clothing and positioned supine on a mat. The therapist first teaches the client how to perform abdominal breathing, then assists the client to further relax by the use of a series of relaxation/assessment techniques. This is followed by the slow and gentle traction of the client’s limbs and head in co-ordination with their rhythmic breathing pattern. Each traction is gradually increased until a full stretch has been achieved. The stretch is then slowly released and the limb is repositioned and tractioned at a different angle, resulting in the elongation of the entire vertebral column.  PSM is very beneficial in the rehabilitation of such conditions as whiplash, thoracic outlet syndrome, headaches, stress, reduced range of motion, degenerative disc disorder, sacro-iliac (SI) joint dysfunctions, sciatic problems, and non-specific low pack pain. It also has a considerable positive effect on all soft tissues and joint structures especially the fascia, muscles, muscle spindles, tendons, golgi tendon organ, ligaments, joints and joint capsules.
