Advanced Soft Tissue Manipulation: The Lower ExtremityInstructor: Bruce McKinnon, RMT January 26 & 27, 2008 This is a 2-day course originally developed by Grace Chan to offer different perspectives on assessment and treatment of the lower extremity. The focus of day one will be directed to the relationships of the pelvis and thigh and will include a review of the anatomy and biomechanics as well as assessment and treatment of the pelvis, hip and knee. We will also examine and treat the relationships of the pelvis to the psoas and other muscles of the hip and thigh. Day two will focus on the anatomy, biomechanics, assessment and treatment of the leg and foot. We will focus our attention to the myofascia of the leg, including the tibia, fibula, interosseous membrane, talocrural, subtalar and foot joints. Technique applications range from direct myofascial release, to craniosacral-style indirect fascial release techniques, articular pumping and ligamentous release. These techniques are easy to apply and can be beneficial for the treatment of lower limb issues such as pelvic imbalance, IT band syndrome, chronic hamstring strain, compartment syndromes, ankle sprain and plantar fascitis. Register and pay by January 11, 2008 ~ $350.00 Register and pay after January 11, 2008 ~ $380.00 7 ceu’s Pathways from PainInstructor: Meredith Sands Keator February 9 & 10, 2008 The Secret Life of Tension: Mapping the Pathways to Pain Relief .... From emotional reaction to muscular contraction to physical pain, we are a series of responses that result in tension in the effort to actually HELP us avoid pain for as long as possible. However, when tension reaches its threshold, a pain syndrome arises and clients come to us looking for relief. Tension patterns have a number of predictable pathways in which to best accomplish their job. This weekend will outline these pathways, helping therapists track the genesis of a pain syndrome and offer pain relief faster and more effectively - while still relying on their own techniques. A stretching program and workbook based on this information is available for a fee of $15.00. This will help you prevent therapist burnout and keep you learning well beyond the weekend. This workshop has been called 'an informative and nurturing weekend retreat for massage therapists'! Register and pay by January 25, 2008~ $350.00 Register and pay after January 25, 2008 ~ $380.00 7 ceu’s Passive Stretch MassageInstructor: Piroska Kennedy, RMT February 22, 23 & 24, 2008 Passive Stretch Massage (PSM) is a form of bodywork in which the client is dressed in loose clothing and positioned supine on a mat. The therapist first teaches the client how to perform abdominal breathing then, assists the client to further relax by the use of a series of relaxation/assessment techniques. This is followed by the slow and gentle traction of the client’s limbs and head in co-ordination with their rhythmic breathing pattern. Each traction is gradually increased until a full stretch has been achieved. The stretch is then slowly released and the limb is repositioned and tractioned at a different angle, resulting in the elongation of the entire vertebral column. PSM is very beneficial in the rehabilitation of such conditions as whiplash, thoracic outlet syndrome, headaches, stress, reduced range of motion, degenerative disc disorder, sacro-iliac (SI) joint dysfunctions, sciatic problems, and non-specific low pack pain. It also has a considerable positive effect on all soft tissues and joint structures especially the fascia, muscles, muscle spindles, tendons, golgi tendon organ, ligaments, joints and joint capsules. Register and pay by February 8, 2008 ~ $425.00 Register and pay after February 8, 2008 ~ $475.00 Course hours are Friday 5:30pm - 9:30pm Saturday & Sunday 9:30am - 5:30pm 9 ceu’sAnatomy Review Series:Instructor: Bruce McKinnon, RMT If you’ve ever been stuck for words when your client asks “so what muscle is that?”, then these courses are for you! Delivered in digestible one-day units, these in-depth classes will review the relevant functional and practical anatomy you need to bring to your practice. Material will be focused to the neuro-musclo-skeletal components of each region and when possible, include time for palpation and structural identification. Relevant vascular, lymphatic and visceral structures will also be included. Part I - Lower Limb & Pelvis - March 30, 2008 Register and pay by March 30, 2008 ~ $175.00 Register and pay after March 30, 2008 ~ $200.00 Part II - Upper Limb & Shoulder Girdle - April 20, 2008 Register and pay by April 4. 2008 ~ $175.00 Register and pay after April 4, 2008 ~ $200.00 Part III - Trunk/Thorax/Abdomen AND Part IV- Head & Neck Will be offered in Fall 2008 4 ceu's per part return to the topCranial Course Series ..... Parts I - IVInstructor: Mark Snow, RMT "Levels I and II must be completed in order to register" Part III - April 5 & 6, 2008 This 2-day course reviews the concepts presented in Parts I & II of the cranial series. Part III considers the physiologic motions of the temporals, parietals, and frontals. Assessment of primary lesions of the “vault” bones versus secondary adaptation lesions is examined and practiced. Lesions of the sutures are discussed and treated with a specific protocol. Part III concludes with two additional balancing techniques and a discussion regarding integration in the massage therapy setting. Register and pay by March 20, 2008 ~ $350.00 Register and pay after March 20, 2008 ~ $380.00 Part IV - May 3 & 4, 2008 This 2-day course reviews the concepts presented in parts I, II and III of the cranial series. Part IV considers the anatomy and physiology of the ethmoid bone and the bones of the face. Assessment and treatment techniques are practiced with respect to the bones individually, as well as the numerous sutural lesion possibilities. Part IV concludes with two techniques to balance the fluids within the cranial-sacral system and discussion regarding integration in the massage therapy setting. Register and pay by April 18, 2008 ~ $350.00 Register and pay after April 18, 2008 ~ $380.00 7 ceu's per part In-Chair MassageInstructor: Rod Walker, RMT April 13, 2008 Rod will teach a series of techniques that will address the upper and lower back, shoulder girdle region, neck, head and face. Emphasis will also be on the biomechanics of applying the techniques effectively. There will also be discussions on the workings of the chair and the standards of practice pertaining to onsite practice. At the end of the day, you will have learned an integrated routine for in-chair massage. Register and pay by March 28, 2008 ~ $175.00 Register and pay after March 28, 2008 ~ $200.00 4 ceu’s Neuromuscular Integration and Stuctural Alignment (NISA)Instructor: Margaret Colborne, RMT April 25, 26, 27 & 28, 2008 NISA is a direct fascial, deep tissue technique. The NISA process releases fascial adhesions, stretches, frees & clears the tissue. The softened layers of fascia, having regained their flexibility and elasticity, permit improved structural alignment and body mechanics. The 4-day training is an intensive practical workshop. The NISA techniques can easily be incorporated into your massage practice and significantly improve the results and sustain the effects of your treatments on your clients. Register and pay by April 11, 2008 ~ $600.00 Register and pay after April 11, 2008 ~ $650.00 14 ceu’s return to the topPathology/Clinical Theory Review Series: Massage Therapy and CancerInstructor: Debra Curties, RMT Massage therapists are increasingly providing massage therapy for clients in all stages of the cancer journey, and are gaining more acceptance within the health care world’s perspective of integrative cancer patient care. This two-day seminar focuses on what the massage practitioner needs to know about cancer as a disease and about medical treatment protocols in order to plan and implement appropriate and effective treatment plans. An overview of what the research literature says about massage therapy’s efficacies in cancer care is also presented. Day 1 - June 1, 2008 On Day 1 the focus is on what cancer is, how it behaves, and the types of symptoms it creates. The fear that massage therapy may promote cancer spread is addressed. Medical treatment protocols, and how the massage therapist can work compatibly with them, is the major topic of the afternoon. Register and pay by May 16, 2008 ~ $175.00 Register and pay after May 16, 2008 ~ $200.00 Day 2 - June 22, 2008 On Day 2, the focus is on massage therapy clinical thinking and treatment planning for clients with cancer. This is done in a case discussion format. Register and pay by June 6, 2008 ~ $175.00 Register and pay after June 6, 2008 ~ $200.00 3.5 ceu’s per day Integrated AssessmentInstructor: Mark Snow, RMT June 7 & 8, 2008 This 2-day course is designed to enable the therapist to make the necessary links between the case history, observation, palpation and testing, in order to formulate an efficient and effective treatment plan. We will dissect the key features of assessment, focusing on palpation ( direct & indirect ) as an essential tool to determine where restrictions/dysfunctions are located in the body. The goal of the course is to improve therapist confidence with regard to: Prioritizing areas needing treatment; Complex case presentations; considering myofascial, articular, cranial and visceral interrelationships; integrating knowledge gained from regionally focused continuing education courses; “Red-Flag” considerations. A global integrated approach to client assessment help the therapist prioritize areas of dysfunction and decide where to treat.
